A fun, patriotic tea cosy inspired by Uncle Sam and 250 years of independence, designed to be knittable for everyone.
I’ve been working on a brand-new design sketch this week for something I’m calling the Uncle Sam Tea Cosy. It’s a commemorative tea cosy to celebrate 250 years of American independence, and it’s full of patriotic red, white and blue. The character himself has ended up looking like a mix of the Monopoly Man and the Kentucky Fried Chicken fella, but really he’s my own playful take on Samuel Wilson, the meat packer who inspired the Uncle Sam nickname. In one hand he’s holding the Constitution, and with the other he’s giving a proud salute.
The sketch looks brilliant, but turning it into an accessible knitting pattern is going to take some clever thinking. The vertical stripes look fantastic on paper, but they’re not the easiest thing to knit if I want this pattern to be enjoyable for everyone. I know how many knitters avoid colour work, and a celebratory tea cosy like this shouldn’t feel out of reach. So instead of creating a big intarsia chart, I’m planning to knit the stripes horizontally and then turn the work. It’s a bit of a puzzle, but a fun one.
I’m also hoping I can knit the waistcoat and shirt as one piece, with decreases in all the right places so the shaping works without needing any colour work at all. If I can pull that off, it will keep the pattern friendly, straightforward and widely knittable, which is exactly what I want for a design like this.
And yes, it’s already the 5th of June and I’d love to have the Uncle Sam Tea Cosy pattern on the website by the 21st. That doesn’t give me much time, but I do love a challenge. If it means knitting morning, noon and night for a bit, then that’s what I’ll do. This is a design I really want to bring to life in time for the celebrations.
I’ll keep you posted as it grows from sketch to stitches. It’s going to be a fun one.
