This is a rather distinctive tea cosy design; a plump little Peregrine Falcon perched atop a teapot!
Once teetering on the edge of extinction, these awe-inspiring birds have made a remarkable comeback and can now be found on every continent except Antarctica. From windswept cliffs to busy cityscapes, they’ve boldly made themselves at home wherever there's room to swoop.
The idea for this cosy came from a request by someone keen to knit their own falcon and who was I to resist such a majestic muse?
Over the past few years, we’ve made it a tradition to visit the falconry display at Dunrobin Castle, where the Peregrine always steals the show with its dramatic flights and gravity-defying swoops above the audience. It’s utterly thrilling to watch, and the crowds never fail to gather in awe.
So my falcon, true to the shape of a teapot, is a bit round in the middle, but sharp-eyed, of course! Peregrines can spot prey from over a mile away, so it makes sense they'd be the first to notice when the kettle is put on for tea.
I’m hoping to capture their stunning plumage with a bit of yarn sorcery; perhaps two strands of colour twisted together for texture, though I’m not yet sure how well that will work. If not, I’ll try my hand at charting it out and knitting it Fair Isle style for more detail. It’s all part of the adventure.
I love those iconic hoods they wear to keep calm; they make the birds look like miniature leather-clad bikers, ready to roll.
This one’s shaping up to be a really interesting knit, and I suspect I’ll learn even more about these magnificent birds along the way. Time to grab some yarn and start the flight of fancy.
