The next Flipping good fun tea cosy design is the Pancake Day Lady, perfect for Shrove Tuesday and for anyone marking Lent with a cheerful tea cosy. A new Pancake Day tea cosy design inspired by Shrove Tuesday traditions. This blog post shares the early sketch, design ideas, and creative process behind the Pancake Day Lady Tea Cosy.
I have always loved pancakes and not only on Pancake Day. When I was growing up I did not like eggs, so Mum used to make pancakes every week to help me eat one. I still enjoy them now, although these days I mostly save them for Shrove Tuesday.
For this nostalgic tea cosy design I wanted to capture the joy of making pancakes. I have created a lady in the kitchen, mid flip, with the pancake just lifting from the pan as if it is about to take flight. In knitting the pancake needs to be attached to something, so this gentle lift gives the sense of movement without the pancake being completely loose.
In her other hand she carries a traditional stack of pancakes on a plate. I am planning to add a slice of lemon on top, although when I was a child I always preferred orange. I will see which looks best as the design develops.
The lady is dressed in a vintage style pinny from the nineteen forties. I have always loved the look of them and before automatic washing machines made laundry easier, many women wore a pinny to protect their clothes while cooking. It adds a lovely nostalgic touch to the Pancake Day theme.
There are two challenges with this design. When the arms are holding items the weight can sometimes make them droop, so I will need to build in clever support to keep everything in place. The second challenge is time. Pancake Day marks the start of Lent and because Easter is early this year, Shrove Tuesday is earlier too. Instead of falling at the end of February it arrives on the seventeenth, so I need to get my knitting skates on.
