So I was asked; 'Can you design a knitting pattern of a cake to cover a tissue box', and after some back and forth, we came up with a design for a cake-inspired cube tissue box cover.
I’ve often toyed with the idea of designing tissue box covers; they’re just as playful as tea cosies and can be transformed into anything your imagination fancies. But this particular cosy came about by request. A lovely lady got in touch asking if I’d create a knitted cake tissue box cover, as all the patterns she’d found were crochet-only.
The first hurdle? Finding a box that matched the dimensions of the ones she’d bought. Despite being called 'cube' tissues, the boxes aren’t true cubes at all, the sides vary. So off I went to the supermarket, ruler in hand, measuring boxes like a very determined crafter on a mission.
I’ve settled on a working size of 10cm wide × 11cm deep × 11.5cm tall, with the tissue hole centred on the top. The design will be based on a classic Victoria sponge: jam and cream peeking out at the sides, soft sponge texture and a pink iced top adorned with piped swirls, cherries and sprinkles. I’m planning to use 10mm pom-poms for the sprinkles, those mixed colour packs are just the ticket.
I don’t anticipate any major challenges, though I suspect the piped icing peaks will be the fiddliest bit. I’d love to get some ridged texture into those for extra realism.
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a joyful project and I’m already thinking about what other tissue box covers might follow. There’s something rather delightful about turning the everyday into a treat.
