Dinosaurs are endlessly exciting, and our fascination with them never fades, so it felt like the perfect time to create another prehistoric tea cosy to join my growing collection of dinosaur‑themed designs.
This tea cosy is going to be a Pterodactyl tea cosy. It is not technically a dinosaur, but it is definitely a prehistoric creature and a fun addition to my dinosaur themed tea cosy designs. The cosy will look like a classic pterodactyl, the well known flying reptile, although my version leans a little towards a Pteranodon with its distinctive head crest.
I have sketched him in a sitting position, as if he is perched on a cliff edge like a seabird. With their huge wingspans, experts believe pterosaurs folded their wings for warmth and for practical reasons, so the Pteranodon tea cosy will have folded wings too. This works very well for the structure of a knitted tea cosy.
The head will have a strong beak and a bold crest at the back. I want him to have plenty of dramatic character, so I will use cat style animal safety eyes with knitted eyelids to give him a slightly sinister and expressive look.
The most challenging part will be the structure, especially the wings, the neck, and the support needed for the head, beak and crest. But I am confident it will all come together.
I want this design to feel more lifelike than cartoony, or at least as lifelike as knitting allows. One lovely thing about this prehistoric tea cosy is that it can be knitted in any colour, because fossils do not tell us what colour these creatures were. I am leaning towards Copper and Tomato from the Stylecraft Special DK range because they feel like good dinosaur colours.
