Autumn Woodland Fair Isle Tea Cosy

Autumn Woodland Fair Isle

Description

The Autumn Woodland Fair Isle tea cosy is a colour work knitting pattern inspired by the richness of autumn and the natural world. Designed for Simply Knitting Magazine Issue 281, on sale 1st September 2026, this novelty tea cosy features charming seasonal motifs worked directly into the fabric to create a characterful and beautifully detailed design.

When you walk through the woods in autumn, the colours always look softer. The vibrant greens begin to shift towards orange, auburn, yellow and red. The trees slowly become bare, but never all at once, and the nuts and berries ripen to feed wildlife throughout the colder months. This cosy captures that gentle transition from late summer to early winter.

I love Fair Isle knitting because the small motifs allow you to hint at different ideas and themes. The motifs on this tea cosy have a distinctly autumnal feel. Trees changing and dropping their leaves, pumpkins, and red spotted toadstools all appear in the colour work, forming a checklist of the things you might see on a woodland walk.

The finial on top of the tea cosy is a giant sized acorn, not quite ripened and still green. It finishes the cosy with a nutty flourish and adds a playful sculptural element to the design.

The Autumn Woodland Fair Isle tea cosy is a great stash buster and can be knitted in odds and ends of DK yarn left over from other projects. The cosy is knitted throughout on 4.00 mm needles. Because the patterned section is worked in DK weight yarn, the tea cosy is fully lined to provide extra insulation and keep your teapot warm for longer.

You can find the knitting pattern for the Autumn Woodland Fair Isle tea cosy in Simply Knitting Magazine Issue 281. The pattern will be available to buy direct from TeaCosyFolk on 1st April 2027.

It is a delightful tea cosy that you will go nuts for.
