Description

The Pheasant Tea Cosy is a striking and characterful design inspired by one of Britain’s most handsome countryside birds. This cosy began life as a special commission for a lady who wanted to knit a pheasant tea cosy but couldn’t find a pattern she liked, so she asked if I would create one. I wanted to design a cosy that captured everything we love about pheasants: their aristocratic charm, their glossy green hoods, their scarlet eye patches and their beautifully speckled plumage. They are such proud, elegant birds that you can almost imagine one wearing a monocle.

But pheasants also have another side to them, as any motorist will know. For all their beauty, they are famously daft and seem to run towards danger rather than away from it, which is why you so often see them dithering by the sides of our countryside roads. I wanted the cosy to reflect both sides of their personality, so the pheasant tea cosy has the handsome colouring and markings of the bird, and then I added a pair of dangling legs that swing down when you lift the teapot. It gives the cosy that wonderfully silly, slightly clueless pheasant energy that makes people smile.

The cosy is knitted in Stylecraft Special DK, which is perfect for this design because it is an excellent acrylic for sculptural knitting. It holds the shaping beautifully and gives the feathers and head structure without being heavy. The cosy fits a medium sized teapot and is designed to be enjoyable for knitters of all levels. Although the feathers look like they might involve charts or colour work, there is no chart work at all and no complicated colour work beyond simple stripes. The effect is detailed and impressive, but the knitting is surprisingly straightforward.

This pheasant tea cosy is a lovely project for anyone who enjoys wildlife knitting patterns, countryside themes or characterful tea cosies with personality. It combines the elegance of the pheasant with its famously foolish behaviour, creating a cosy that is both beautiful and amusing. It keeps the teapot warm, looks wonderful on the table and makes a charming gift for bird lovers and knitters alike.
