Description

The sinking of RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912 remains one of the most significant maritime tragedies in history. More than 1,500 passengers and crew lost their lives when the ship struck an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. This Titanic tea cosy is my knitted tribute to that moment in time, created with care and respect for the story that still captures people’s hearts.

The main body of the tea cosy is shaped like a stone memorial plinth, with Titanic worked across the front in fair isle. Above it rises the cold North Atlantic, knitted in textured, sculpted waves to give the impression of a restless sea.

Inside the cosy, a structural support ring helps flatten the top for a neat silhouette and adds an extra layer of insulation to keep the teapot warm.

Resting on the top is the iceberg and the Titanic herself. I’ve shown the ship with her stern raised, echoing the familiar image of the vessel moments after catastrophic structural failure caused her to break apart. It’s a dramatic and instantly recognisable pose that many associate with the disaster.

More than a century later, the story of the unsinkable ship still resonates. Titanic lies 3,821 metres below the surface of the North Atlantic and the courage and resilience of the 706 survivors continue to be remembered. This knitting pattern is designed as a small, thoughtful memorial; a way to honour the ship, the people aboard her and the legacy that lives on.

A knitted tribute Honouring the story and the legacy of RMS Titanic.
