Description

The Life Cycle of a Sunflower Tea Cosy is a knitted celebration of nature’s rhythm; a tactile tribute to the circle of life in a floral tea cosy.

At its base, nestled in a ring of rich, earthy brown, sits a single sunflower seed; black and white striped, worked in simple two-colour fair isle from a chart. It’s a gentle introduction to charted knitting, perfect for those just dipping their needles into the technique. The black and white seed pod adds a subtle autumnal charm to the cosy, perfect for the harvest season, creating a theme of autumn tea accessories.

From that seed, a two-leaf seedling begins to sprout, capturing the early stirrings of growth. In real life, it takes around 90 days for a sunflower to journey from this tender stage to full bloom.

Next comes a young plant, not yet at its towering height, but with a bud forming. The bracts are still tightly wrapped around the flower head, guarding the delicate petals as they prepare to unfurl.

Then we reach the sunflower in its prime; radiant, golden, and glorious. Fully open and buzzing with life, it beckons pollinators and stands tall in its moment of splendour.

Finally, the last stage: the flower begins to fade. Its head droops, petals brown, and seeds mature within. Once ripened, they’ll fall to the earth, ready to begin the cycle anew.

This tea cosy was originally designed for a woman entering an agricultural craft show, and it was an absolute joy to create. It’s a striking piece; rich in symbolism, texture, and storytelling. A true homage to growth, change, and renewal.

A blooming lovely brew; where sunflower spirit warms your teapot for teatime.
