Description

With NASA’s Artemis II mission scheduled for a lunar flyby in February 2026 and the first woman set to walk on the moon later that year; the space race is back in the spotlight. It’s been over 50 years since the last moonwalk and all this cosmic excitement has inspired my latest knitting design, a moon-surface cowl.

This neck warmer mimics the cratered texture of the lunar landscape, echoing the dents and impact marks from the Great Bombardment. I’ve used cable knitting techniques to create a tactile surface with two distinct crater sizes. Larger craters sit at the top and bottom edges, while smaller ones run compactly through the centre, forming a balanced and visually striking pattern.

The cowl is knitted flat on two needles and seamed at the back. I’ve chosen Stylecraft Special DK for its softness, stitch definition, and wide colour range, perfect for capturing your own lunar mood. Whether you go for moonstone greys, cosmic blues, or a pop of Poppy red, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Why DK weight? A close-fitting cowl in heavier yarn can feel too warm, especially indoors. Double knitting yarn offers just the right level of comfort, ideal for layering under a coat or wearing around the house when you need a little extra warmth.

The Lunar Landing Cowl isn’t just a neck warmer, it’s a multi-tasking marvel. Its close-fitting shape means you can wear it snug around your neck on chilly days, or pull it up over your head as a makeshift hat when the wind picks up. And for those moments when you need your hair out of the way, it doubles as a cosmic headband; just slide it on like an Alice band and enjoy crater-inspired style with practical flair.

As the temperature drops and the headlines heat up with talk of moon missions and lunar landings, there’s no better time to cast on something stellar. The Lunar Landing Cowl is your chance to knit a piece of the cosmos; textured with crater-like cables and crafted in soft, wearable DK yarn. Whether you're stargazing or just braving the school run, this moon-inspired neck warmer brings a touch of space-age style to chilly days. Get ahead of the curve and wrap yourself in a little lunar magic.
