The Highland Fling Cushion was designed for the Simply Knitting Magazine issue 190 which went on sale on the 5th September 2019.

Novelty cushions are great fun and highland cattle are just so adorable. I wanted to make a simple cushion that reminded me of Heilan Coos.

The main part of the cushion is a variation of the wavy pattern Feather and Fan stitch. I didn't want regular rows of loops because highland cattle always seem to unkempt and raggedy, the wavy rows gave the cow this look.

The bottom of the cushion is held closed with three large wooden buttons. The Cow cushion cover fits a 15 inch or 38cm square cushion insert.

I love the cows cute face, it's eyes peeping out from under its hair.

I took inspiration for the nose from cathedral window patchwork, where the fabric is pulled back to reveal what's below; in this case is the wrong side of the stocking stitch.

The Heilan Coo Cushion is a lovely project to know and makes a great feature cushion that appeals to children and grownups.

I have also designed a matching Shetland Sheep Cushion and the two cushions make a great pair. Both sheep and cow are included in the same knitting pattern.

Moooove over - let me sit down!
