Pterodactyl Tea Cosy and Knitting Pattern

Description

The Pterodactyl Tea Cosy is a playful, characterful design that looks as though it has swooped straight out of the late Jurassic period. Prehistoric creatures always appeal to lovers of the quirky and unusual, and I thought a sitting flying reptile would make a wonderfully eye‑catching teapot cover.

This pterosaur has a Pteranodon‑like look, with its horn‑shaped head crest and short tail. The main cosy forms the body, while the head is knitted separately so it rises proudly from the top.

For the colour palette, I chose warm Gingerbread and Copper shades from Stylecraft Special DK, with Tomato for that striking crest at the back of the head.

Because the creature is sitting, his wings are folded neatly at his sides, making them a perfect fit around the teapot. He has little claws and toes to suggest his feet, adding to his prehistoric charm.

His beady eyes are 21mm green safety cat eyes with elongated pupils. I knitted eyelid surrounds to frame them, giving the Pterodactyl a slightly menacing, watchful expression; fitting for a 'terror wing' pterosaur.
