Description

The Happy New Year tea cosy was designed for the Simply Knitting Magazine issue 272 which goes on sale on the 27th November 2025.

A New Year brings fresh knitting projects and endless possibilities and we’re starting with a tea cosy inspired by the spectacular London New Year’s Eve fireworks.

I’ve never been to the firework display in person, but I always watch it on television: the music, the explosions, and the iconic London skyline. Big Ben was my inspiration for this cosy, symbolising the stroke of midnight and the passing of time as one year becomes the next.

Around the famous clock, fireworks burst across the dark sky. They’re knitted in DK yarn for the main colour, with King Cole Tinsel Chunky in the vibrant Circus shade behind them to give each explosion extra sparkle and energy.

The fireworks stand proud of the cosy on little knitted loops, creating the effect of bright bursts filling the skies above Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The contrast of vivid colours against the black background makes the design striking and sophisticated.

One of the most dramatic details is the big shooting firework that rises up from the main cosy itself. It arcs gracefully towards the rooftop of the clock tower on a knitted jet stream, before bursting just past the tower in a dazzling explosion of colour. This bold feature gives the design movement and energy, as if the fireworks are truly soaring into the London sky above Big Ben.

This tea cosy was a joy to create. It features bobble stitch and knitted loops for the fireworks, plus a cast‑on cast‑off technique to shape the bursts. If you’re new to these stitches, there are helpful YouTube tutorials linked below to guide you through each step.

You can find the knitting pattern for the Happy New Year tea cosy in Simply Knitting Magazine issue 272. The pattern will be available to buy direct from TeaCosyFolk on 27th June 2026.
